I wondered this during my visit to BIM World 2023 in Munich, ‘home of digitalisation’.

This much became clear to me in Munich, given the large number of vendors that descended on the BIM gold. From traditional construction companies and established software and technology companies to startups and hardware and robot manufacturers. It struck me that many companies offer similar partial solutions for digitisation issues. Does the market need some more maturity and oversight? Are we going to see more consolidation in the near future? I think so.

I dare to think a bit further ahead. For instance, I expect the trend of automation in scan to BIM to continue considerably. AI will play a big role in this, for instance in point cloud segmentation. So we are going to see more and more of that as well. AI is going to simplify the process, that much is certain.

This usually takes place in the cloud, with or without the help of AI. The common denominator is the collection, processing and deployment of data to make processes more efficient. The key to success is integration, where technologies from different sectors come together. The wide range and many possible (partial) applications can appear cluttered.
